Pub Review: The Bricklayers Arms, Flaunden

Hertfordshire is blessed with a plethora of cosy country pubs. From open fires to local ales, home-cooked pies to delicious desserts, I'm spoilt for choice when it comes to welcoming pubs.

After a few recent visits, I wanted to tell you about one of my new favourites. Located in the tiny village of Flaunden, just outside the M25 and on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, the Bricklayers Arms is an award-winning 18th century inn.

Bricklayers Arms, Flaunden - Pub Review

I've now been to the Bricklayers Arms several times, usually for a special occasion such as an anniversary or birthday. Whether in the summer months or in dark winter, the pub has a warm, cosy feel, and the menu never disappoints.

Being a quintessential British pub, you would expect traditional home-cooked dishes...and you would be correct. They even smoke their own fish!

Earlier this summer I got stuck into a starter of fresh white crab with home smoked salmon, chive cream & blinis (tasty!).

Claire got stuck into a warm duck breast salad....

...and then I devoured the dish that Sunday afternoon's are made for: roast beef with all the trimmings, and lashings of gravy.

Back to the food in a minute.

Did I mention that the Bricklayers Arms also has a lovely, relaxed, child-friendly beer garden too? It catches the evening sun just nicely :)

It is possible to eat in the beer garden too. Just speak to the staff, and they will lay a table for you :)

The interior of the pub is very English, and incredibly comfortable, with friendly bar staff and helpful service, and awards that litter the sideboards and walls.

Back to the food. What did I have for dessert? Eton mess of course.

£33 for three-courses. Not bad at all!

If you're ever in the area, or even if you're going to visit the Warner Bros Studio tour (the Bricklayers Arms in Flaunden is a 15-minute drive away), I would definitely recommend it for lunch or dinner. Lots of food choice, lots of ale choice, plenty of parking and great service at a great price. Give it a go!
